On June 8 (local time), Lexus unveiled the all-new GX during its world premiere in Austin, Texas, USA. The vehicle is set to be gradually released in different regions, starting from the end of 2023.
Since its establishment in 1989, Lexus has remained steadfast in its pursuit of innovation, consistently pushing the boundaries of technology and design to deliver fresh value to its customers. Driven by our passion to enhance a lifestyle with the car and infuse it with boundless enjoyment, we are committed to offering an extensive range of options that cater to the diverse needs of our valued customers worldwide. Keeping this vision at the forefront, we introduced the NX and LX in 2021, embodying the dawn of the next generation of Lexus, and showcasing their meticulously refined qualities. Additionally, in 2022, we presented the RX and RZ, featuring their sophisticated electrification technologies.
For 2023, we will introduce the new LM, a new answer to chauffeur-driven luxury, and the new LBX, a segment-defying compact with a new luxury value proposition, to drive the development of region-specific vehicles meeting the needs of diverse individuals.
Positioned between the LX and RX, the GX is an SUV launched in 2002 primarily targeting the North American market featuring a body-on-frame structure. The vehicle achieves a high degree of both driving performance and interior refinement. With its ability to deliver a comfortable travel experience in any environment, these vehicles have garnered widespread customer acclaim, resulting in cumulative sales of approximately 540,000 units by the end of March 2023.
The all-new GX has been reimagined as “The Premium Off-Roader,” designed to elevate the customer experience in diverse scenarios, whether that’s navigating rugged terrains or cruising along urban streets. Marking its first redesign since its initial launch in 2002, the platform has undergone a comprehensive overhaul. With the incorporation of the new GA-F platform shared with the LX and the inclusion of a highly efficient V6 twin-turbo engine, the vehicle’s fundamental performance has dramatically evolved, striking an optimal balance between power, fuel economy, and quietness. Building upon its legacy of off-road durability, the vehicle has undergone notable advancements, combining purpose-built packages for off-road performance with the introduction of the E-KDSS system, resulting in improved traction on diverse road surfaces. In addition, the vehicle’s individual components boast exceptional rigidity, coupled with the use of EPS to ensure precise and linear steering response while maintaining the signature Lexus on-road ride quality, all while preserving its genuine off-road capabilities. Furthermore, the exterior design embodies the pursuit of proportions and uniqueness rooted in functional essence and dynamic performance, creating a visually striking aesthetic that also contributes to its exceptional driving performance over diverse terrain as an authentic off-roader. With an exterior design crafted to evoke a sense of exceptional performance and adventure, it has been designed to ensure driver comfort on all roads. Lexus is also promoting the “Overtrail Project” in order to bring the enjoyment of diverse outdoor lifestyles and vehicles in line with our desire to deliver outdoor experiences that help people understand, enjoy, and protect nature. The new GX, as the driving force behind the Overtrail Project, will help provide customers with new experiences in magnificent natural environments, such as rugged mountainous terrain and lush forests.

The new GX represents the pinnacle of Lexus’ true off-roaders, showcasing an evolved level of vehicle performance necessary to deliver new experiences to its customers. While preserving the traditional body-on-frame structure, the vehicle’s framework has undergone a comprehensive overhaul. With the implementation of a new GA-F platform and enhanced body rigidity, driving performance on all types of roads see as a remarkable improvement.
Incorporation of the new GA-F platform significantly enhances on-road and off-road driving
- The adoption of the new GA-F platform elevates collision safety performance, enhances quietness, and improves overall driving quality. To achieve the required strength and high rigidity without compromising weight, the new GX strategically utilizes a Tailor Welded Blank technique, where steel materials of varying thicknesses and compositions are skillfully joined in specific locations for side rails and cross members. This meticulous approach ensures optimal driving quality across diverse environments
Class-leading towing performance through a 3.5L V6 twin-turbocharged engine with abundant power and generous torque output
- The V35A-FTS engine is mated to a direct-shift 10-speed automatic transmission (AT). Delivering a direct and engaging feeling, the 10-speed AT features a lock-up clutch that operates in most situations, except during launches, thereby enhancing the overall driving experience. Furthermore, the transition from a conventional 6-speed AT to a 10-speed AT has resulted in cross-gear implementation and a wider range of overall gear ratios. This brings about a rhythmic and pleasant driving experience, as well as simultaneous improvements in fuel efficiency, startup acceleration, and off-road performance. Moreover, the drive force characteristics and gear shift timing have been optimized resulting in dynamic acceleration that aligns with the driver’s intentions, harnessing a delightful sense of acceleration that fully utilizes the extended torque characteristics throughout the high rpm range.
- Equipped with a high-output, high-torque engine, the trailer hitch achieves a towing capacity of approximately 3,600 kg*1, the highest in its class. The vehicle also features Trailer Sway Control, which effectively manages any sway detected from the towed trailer. This system applies individual brake pressure to all four wheels based on the situation, thereby stabilizing the vehicle’s posture and facilitating safe and confident towing.
Optimized suspension geometry provides excellent vehicle stability
- The new suspension system provides both off-road drivability and on-road handling stability at an exceptional level. The front suspension uses a high-mount double wishbone configuration, designed to achieve stable vehicle posture through optimal suspension geometry. Compared to a conventional setup, the coil spring rate has been fine-tuned, the caster trail has been increased, and the king pin offset has been minimized in order to maximize vehicle stability during straight-line driving, cornering, and braking, while also delivering a comfortable driving experience.
- At the rear, a 4-link rigid suspension with lateral control arms is employed to optimize the suspension arm, shock absorber arrangement and characteristics. This effectively controls the movement of the axle, enhancing vehicle stability during braking.
- The shock absorbers are equipped with independent telescopic valves2and FCD*3, while the rigidity of the fastening components has been enhanced through increased torque applied to the suspension peripheral parts. The suspension characteristics have been optimized to provide both vehicle stability and ride comfort, achieved through enhancements in rigidity.
A highly rigid body delivering the Lexus Driving Signature
- To achieve a stable vehicle posture and excellent ride comfort during driving, the number of spot-welding points was increased at the door opening and the bottom of the rockers, while structural adhesives were employed at the sheet metal joints and on the floor. Additionally, an upper radiator support cross brace is implemented, along with a dedicated reinforcement to enhance rigidity around the hood lock area. At the rear, a brace connects the base of the C-pillar to the wheelhouse, creating balanced vehicle dynamics that faithfully translates the driver’s intentions into the driving experience

Repeated driving tests were conducted in various environments around the world in pursuit of vehicle packaging rooted in off-road driving. Furthermore, collaborating closely with professional rally drivers and incorporating their invaluable feedback, the development team relentlessly pursued exceptional reliability, durability, and off-road performance worthy of a genuine Lexus off-roader with the aim to consistently deliver surprises and excitement surpassing customer expectations, regardless of the terrain or driving conditions.
Packaging to enhance off-road performance
- Compared to the previous model, the approach angle has been increased by 5 degrees and the front overhang has been shortened by 20 mm, achieving a design worthy of a genuine Lexus off-roader and a package that delivers excellent off-road durability.
Traditional rigid rear suspension system and extended wheel articulation
- C Building upon the well-established reputation of the previous model, the rigid suspension system has been thoroughly refined to further improve off-road drivability. The shock absorber layout has been optimized to minimize the impact of external disturbances and enhance the overall dampening efficiency of the suspension system, making it easier to control vehicle movement. Additionally, the extension of wheel articulation further enhances traction on rocky and mogul roads.
Electric Power Steering (EPS) system enables enhanced driver focus and concentration
- Instead of the traditional hydraulic power steering system, a new electric power steering system featuring a motor and reduction gearbox has been adopted. During off-road driving, the system minimizes kickback caused by road surface obstacles, ensuring a safe and confident driving experience.
Responsive acceleration and braking for easy control
- Delicate acceleration/deceleration control is required for off-road driving. The new GX exhibits excellent pedal control on rough roads, allowing the driver to precisely control both the gas and brake pedals even at low speeds

- The design emphasizes the vehicle’s toughness, with a 20mm wider tread compared to the standard version and black arch moldings that enhance its solid stance. To enhance off-road drivability, the lower edges of the front and rear bumper corners have been raised, providing improved clearance on rough roads. Additionally, a dedicated center protector has been added to enhance functionality when navigating obstacles off-road. Furthermore, exclusive elements including black outer mirror covers and outside door handles enhance the appearance of a rugged and capable off-roader.
Unique interior and exterior color options to ignite your sense of adventure
- Exterior colors are coordinated to blend with the natural landscape. “Moon Desert, ” a newly developed color with a three-dimensional appearance, is available as an exclusive color combining solid hues with metallic undertones and creating an air of luxury that is characteristic of Lexus. The lineup also offers a bi-tone color option that highlights the distinctive character of the “Overtrail” grade, resulting in a total of six colors to choose from. For the interior, two color options are offered: “Black” and the bright earthy tone of “Chateau.” The seat design incorporates special embossed patterns inspired by the shape of the exterior under-grille, while the shoulder area features accents of olive-colored bio-ultrasuede adding a touch of uniqueness to the color scheme.
Exclusive all-terrain tires combine design and aerodynamics while enhancing driving performance
- Exclusive 265/70R 18 all-terrain tires were developed in collaboration with tire manufacturers to ensure an ideal balance of on-road and off-road driving performance. The sidewalls are designed with a rugged tread pattern that enhances traction on muddy roads. In terms of fuel efficiency, which contrasts with the bold and rugged styling, the shoulder shape of the vehicle has been optimized to effectively manage wind flow and improve aerodynamic performance. It represents a harmonious blend of performance function and design worthy of an authentic off-road vehicle.
E-KDSS further enhances on-road and off-road driving performance
- Lexus introduces the E-KDSS system for the first time, offering exceptional levels of on-road agility and off-road capability. Independent control of the front and rear electric stabilizers allows for more precise stabilizer adjustment, according to road surface conditions and the state of each individual wheel. By integrating this system with the newly developed suspension, the new GX surpasses its predecessors in terms of wheel articulation and improves traction on rocky and mogul roads, further enhancing the vehicle’s well-established off-road performance.
Crawl Control reduces the off-road driving burden
- Crawl control is available to alleviate the driving burden when driving over uneven or slippery off-road terrain. Drive torque and hydraulic brake pressure are automatically controlled according to five-speed settings. Extreme low-speed driving can be achieved solely through steering wheel operation, without the need for acceleration or braking. The vehicle has a strong capability to escape from being stuck, as it effectively reduces wheel spin and wheel lock, thus minimizing strain on the drivetrain.
Advanced brake control technology and Multi-Terrain Monitors enhance driving in diverse environments
- Multi-Terrain Select, now offers six modes (AUTO, DIRT, SAND, MUD, DEEP SNOW, and ROCK) for off-road driving support, up from the previous five modes. Incorporating integrated control of drive torque and suspension, the system goes beyond conventional hydraulic brakes to empower the driver with enhanced driving performance tailored to various road conditions. Furthermore, the operating range, previously limited to low range (L4), has been expanded to include high range (H4), offering even greater versatility. The feature has evolved to enable superior driving performance on all types of roads worldwide, ranging from navigating rocky terrains at extremely low speeds to cruising at higher speeds on unpaved roads. Furthermore, in AUTO mode, the system utilizes data from multiple sensors to estimate the road surface conditions in real time. It then optimizes the brake hydraulics, drive torque, and suspension control accordingly. This eliminates the need for the driver to manually switch modes and allows for maximum driving performance according to the driving situation.
- The multi-terrain monitor is a reassuring system designed for off-road driving, utilizing four cameras to assist the driver in monitoring the surroundings of the vehicle. With cameras mounted on the front, sides, and rear, the system seamlessly switches between camera feeds, displaying high-definition images on the 14-inch screen. This provides the driver with a clear and smooth view of the vehicle’s surroundings, especially in areas that may be difficult to see. By activating the under-floor view, previous footage is displayed as a transparent image, along with indicators showing the current position of the vehicle and tires. This allows the driver to assess the condition of the vehicle and the positioning of the front wheels. Additionally, a new function has been introduced, allowing the vehicle to become transparent and providing a close-up view of the area around the rear wheels. This feature assists the driver in understanding the proximity of obstacles and aids in maneuvering out of challenging situations such as being stuck or encountering a dead end.
- Downhill Assist Control* reduces the driving burden on steep slopes, and automatically adjusts the hydraulic pressure of the brakes on each wheel independently, when descending steep slopes where engine braking alone may not provide sufficient deceleration, ensuring a stable descent without tire lock-up. By maintaining the selected vehicle speed through switch operation, the driver can focus on steering without worrying about brake or accelerator operation, effectively reducing the driving workload.
*Downhill assist control is activated when transfer H4 range is selected, and vehicle speed is below 30 km/h while descending a hill.
Special seats assist in reducing passenger fatigue
- To minimize head toss while driving on rough roads, the seat back sides have been designed to be softer compared to the standard version. When the body comes into contact with the seat back sides, the cushioning helps suppress lateral shaking around the chest area, resulting in reduced head movement and improved stability of forward visibility thereby resulting in reduced fatigue.
Additionally, the seat design incorporates a perforated pattern inspired by the shape of the exterior under-grille, and olive-colored bio-ultrasuede accents on the shoulders, adding a unique touch of color and decorative elements to the seats.
ON-ROAD PERFORMANCE DELIVERING THE LEXUS DRIVING SIGNATURE
Despite being a body-on-frame vehicle, the all-new GX offers exceptional on-road vehicle control and ride comfort. The vehicle’s attributes have undergone enhancements, such as improved body rigidity, to ensure a high-quality driving experience even in urban environments. The EPS system delivers a smooth and precise steering feel, while the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system improves responsiveness and stability. These advancements provide a seamless connection between deceleration, steering, and acceleration, creating a driving sensation that embodies the unique “Lexus Driving Signature,” despite being a full-fledged off-roader.
Crisp and precise steering feel through improved body rigidity and the use of EPS
- The EPS system offers a responsive and easy-to-maneuver steering feel suitable for various speeds, from low to high. The steering rigidity has been enhanced by enlarging the diameter of the shaft and tube, and the circular structure connecting the instrument panel reinforcement to the cowl frame effectively transfers inputs from the steering wheel. This improvement leads to a remarkable 50% increase in lateral steering rigidity compared to the previous model, ensuring excellent responsiveness and vibration suppression.
Enhanced ride comfort at an even higher level
- AVS electronically controls the dampening force of the four shock absorbers according to driving input and road conditions. By utilizing a linear solenoid type actuator that enables precise switching of dampening force, the system reduces input and enhances vehicle stability, even when encountering road surfaces with a mix of large undulations and minor irregularities. It offers excellent steering response, stability, and ride comfort. In addition, information obtained from vertical G-sensor signals, steering sensor signals, speed sensor signals, etc. are used to enable optimal dampening force control.
Class-leading quietness reduces fatigue on long journeys
- By improving the NV performance of the tires and optimizing the characteristics of the cab mount, which connects the body and frame in the distinctive structure of frame cars, the input from the road surface is further reduced. Engine noise is suppressed through an upgraded dash inner silencer. Additionally, strategic placement of foam, sound-absorbing, and sound-insulating materials ensures thorough sealing of even the tiniest gaps, preventing noise intrusion. Furthermore, wind noise is minimized through the optimization of the body shape and the use of acoustic glass, enhancing conversation clarity inside the cabin.

Inspired by the “Tazuna Concept,” which emphasizes a seamless connection between the driver and the vehicle, the interior provides a comfortable and modern space where the driver can return to his or her true self in any environment while ensuring excellent visibility and intuitive operation.

- The front pillars of the vehicle have been pulled back and raised compared to the previous model, creating a square silhouette of a genuine off-roader. The high hood silhouette further enhances this look. Additionally, the vehicle’s horizontal body axis and prominent wheel flares contribute to its solid and commanding stance.
The front design combines the spindle body with off-road functionality
- The design blends the iconic “spindle body,” the distinctive spindle grill of Lexus now represented as a mass, with a rugged and functional protective shape. The center section is equipped with a protective covering to safeguard the vehicle’s components from obstacles encountered during off-road excursions, such as rocks, grass, and trees. The sides feature a grill opening that extends downward to accommodate the sub-radiator, providing both cooling functionality and a unique visual identity befitting of a true off-roader. The low hood center enhances forward visibility, while the high and angular corners of the hood instill a sense of confidence and security when navigating challenging terrain.
Impressive and modern rear view with a commanding presence
- The GX boasts a solid stance, thanks to the extended front and rear fenders, while the sculpted and rugged body design evokes a sense of toughness and modernity. The rear is adorned with a single horizontal combination lamp and the iconic Lexus logotype, serving as a symbol of the brand. Positioned at a higher level, the rear combination lamps ensure enhanced visibility in wooded areas or low-visibility conditions, alerting others to the presence of the vehicle when driving in formation.

- The GX offers a total of seven colors that embody a tough, yet refined world. From solid hues that evoke an off-road image to calming metallic tones that seamlessly blend with urban landscapes, these colors complement the model’s refined appeal. The “Overtrail” grade will offer a lineup of six colors, including the newly developed Moon Desert color and bi-tone options, adding to the diverse range of choices.

Space Design Concept
- The new cockpit design is rooted in the innovative “Tazuna Concept,” which represents the next stage in Lexus’ “human-centered” philosophy. Taking inspiration from the connection between the reins and a rider’s control over a horse, the steering wheel switches are seamlessly integrated with the heads-up display, enabling the driver to effortlessly operate essential functions like navigation and audio, thereby promoting a seamless driving experience and minimizing the need for extensive eye movements.
- To enhance the driver’s perception of vehicle posture during off-roading, a clean horizontal/vertical layout is employed, centered around the top of the instrument panel. The center display is positioned low to maximize forward visibility, contributing to a sense of security for the driver. Furthermore, a metallic accent traverses the center of the instrument panel, creating an open and spacious ambiance. The cockpit features Lexus’ first center display with a synthetic leather border and strategically placed kneepads, combining sleek design with meticulous craftsmanship, resulting in a modern and comfortable environment.
User-friendly center display
- The GX features a large 14-inch touch display at the center, providing easy access to various functions. While the display incorporates soft switches for streamlined integration, essential controls such as the heater and audio utilize physical switches for quick and convenient operation. Attention to detail was given to the size, shape, layout, and display information of the switches, ensuring an intuitive user experience. The placement and design of each switch were carefully considered, taking into account the frequency of use for optimal functionality.
Functional layout and features of the center console
- The center console of the GX is designed with off-road driving in mind, ensuring convenient operability. Driving and drivetrain switches are thoughtfully placed on the driver’s side, allowing easy access and control. Furthermore, the cup holders are equipped with slide lids that provide additional utility. When closed, these lids create a space for smartphones and other digital devices, thereby enhancing usability.
Versatile rear seat design for diverse needs
- The second-row seat configuration offers great flexibility while a third-row seat is available for even more seating capacity. Both the second and third rows are designed with ample front/ rear couple distance, enhancing practicality and comfort. In addition, the third-row seats are equipped with an optional electric folding mechanism that can be operated independently on either side, expanding the cargo capacity while allowing the seats to be arranged to suit a variety of customer usage scenarios.
Interior colors that match an outdoor lifestyle
- The interior of the vehicle embraces a monotone color scheme that harmonizes with the natural environment. Customers can select from three interior color options to align with their unique lifestyles, while the “Overtrail” grade offers two color choices. The door trim surface is crafted from perforated material, creating a captivating visual transformation as the angle changes, embodying both resilience and a remarkable sense of depth. Enhancing the overall ambiance, the center console is elegantly adorned with “Glossy Charcoal,” capturing the enchanting luster of charcoal and elevating the perception of refined craftsmanship.

Advanced Preventive Safety Technologies: Lexus Safety System +
Lexus is actively developing safety technologies with the ultimate goal of achieving “zero fatalities and injuries from traffic accidents” in a mobility society. Recognizing the importance of speedily developing world-class advanced safety technologies and spreading their adoption to a greater number of vehicles, we have implemented the latest Lexus Safety System + in the new GX. These features greatly contribute to enhancing the safety and peace of mind for our customers during their drive.
Key Features
- Pre-crash Safety System (PCS): By adopting a sensor that combines millimeter-wave radar and monocular camera, this system assists in avoiding collisions with vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles at intersections.
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (with all-speed follow function): This feature utilizes millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera to recognize preceding vehicles, assisting the driver in maintaining a set following distance. When the preceding vehicle comes to a stop, the system brings the vehicle to a stop and maintains that position. When the preceding vehicle resumes motion, the driver can initiate acceleration to resume the adaptive cruise control. This system significantly reduces the driver’s workload, especially in scenarios such as congested highway traffic where frequent stopping and starting are required.
- Lane Departure Alert (LDA): When there is a risk of deviation from the lane, this system provides a warning to the driver and supports steering operations to avoid lane departure.
