LEXUS CREATES
THE ART OF
FUROSHIKI
The furoshiki is a traditional Japanese square fabric, which is used to transport all kinds of objects and to wrap gifts, regardless of size and shape.
The name of furoshiki comes from "furo" (bath) and "shiki" (ceremony).
This tradition dates back to the Muromachi period (1392-1573) and was used not to confuse, or mix, clothing in traditional Japanese baths (onsen).
Through the centuries, it has become an everyday object, and it is made with different fabrics: silk, cotton, rayon and nylon.
The use of furoshiki helps protect and care for the environment in Japan and around the world, and its uses are endless.
FUROSHIKI LINK COLLECTIVE
Aiming at the coexistence of contemporary textile design and traditional Japanese craftsmanship,
furoshiki reproduces textiles through a network of artists and designers from around the
world.
Their goal is to transcend cultures and generations by creating beautiful and functional products, fusing international design with traditional Japanese production methods.
"We believe that Japanese craftsmanship is unsurpassed in terms of quality and attention to detail. This is why all of our furoshiki are printed and hand-sewn in Japan by a family business with more than 50 years of experience in producing furoshiki,” they point out.
Although Japanese artisans often spend a lifetime perfecting their art, much of that skill and knowledge is being lost as mass production, cost reduction, and culture have increasingly prompted business decisions.
"Valuable insights are disappearing as tools shrink, and the last few small factories and workshops are disappearing. We hope to play this role well and keep these crafts alive by showing what can be accomplished when creativity and crafts come together."
