How many vehicles can take credit for leading their class for more than two decades? The Lexus RX can. In fact, the competition looks to the RX as a benchmark in the luxury SUV category, as they have since Lexus defined that category when it emerged.
We believe that our commitment to constantly undertaking new challenges and continually creating unique appeal is what has driven the RX to such a pinnacle.
The RX has always lead the market by providing “one-of-a-kind value that only the RX could create.” But in order to do that, the RX has had to evolve with the times and never stop offering unexpected and surprising value.
Such value is the product of anticipating customers’ needs through ongoing innovation, a commitment to omotenashi, or hospitality, and continuous improvement (kaizen). With this undying spirit, we hope the RX will continue to remain a benchmark for years to come.
THE BIRTH OF A NEW GENRE
When the RX was first introduced in 1998 there were doubts. Doubts this vehicle would sell. Doubts people would understand its concept. Doubts people would ‘get’ it.
The RX was not an SUV, in the traditional sense, as people viewed them then. Nor was it a sedan.
But we quickly learned that there was a latent desire in the market for this vehicle — one that blurred the lines between a driver’s car and a practical utility.
As our chief engineer at the time put it, “Its biggest significance is that we released a new genre of vehicle into the market.”
All of this was underpinned by an ability to deliver amazing, exciting experiences alongside superior quality, and advanced technology.
So when the vehicle was released in the US and it was a resounding success, all those doubts were quickly forgotten.
CONTINUING TO AMAZE
The constantly-pioneering RX has delighted and thrilled customers with every new release. From its genre-defining launch in 1998, to becoming the world’s first full hybrid luxury SUV in 2005, to today’s advanced safety technology innovations like BladeScan™ Adaptive High-beams, the RX continues to amaze.
Each generation and iteration dramatically raises the bar in its segment, impeccably fusing aggressive styling with sophisticated detailing, all the while rewarding the driver with exhilarating driving dynamics. Ever-improving engines — ranging from hybrids to turbos, continue to be refined, as do the driving dynamics, technology, and luxury comforts.
Laser-cut ornamentation, hand-stitched upholstery, and other touches of superb craftsmanship contribute to the vehicle’s sublime interior.
The current generation features greatly improved handling and rigidity mated with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for manual-like control, power delivery to the road via the Lexus Active Torque All-Wheel Drive system, and a host of creature comforts.
